Programme Note

Venice and its ancient Carnival provide the backdrop for this concert celebrating the musical

heritage of one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Popularly known as the ‘Republic of Music’ its

composers and musicians were influenced by a myriad of styles that originated in Eastern Europe,

North Africa, and the Middle East. From the giants of early baroque, Monteverdi and Vivaldi, to the

street music of the Mardi Gras, this concert explores both the dingy back streets and the

magnificent public squares of La Serenissima.
