Programme Note
The fascinating life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges reads like pure fiction. Born in the Caribbean in 1745 to a wealthy planter and a 16 year old African slave, he went on to become a champion fencer, virtuoso violinist, soldier, dancer and conductor of one of the finest orchestras in Paris, frequently performing for Marie Antoinette.
Michael Nyman’s Trysting Fields is taken from the soundtrack of Peter Greenaway’s film Drowning by Numbers and uses elements of the slow movement of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.
Company by Philip Glass is a gorgeous palate cleanser, originally intended for use as incidental music for a stage adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s novella of the same name.
The concert concludes with Mozart’s sublime Sinfonia Concertante in which the melodic union of the solo violin and viola is akin to the vocal writing he employed in his operas. This programme also features a specially commissioned new work by our Associate Artist, Trish Clowes.
