Programme Note

The programme opens with two trios for clarinet, cello, and piano. First, Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11-the celebrated ‘Gassenhauer’ Trio-written in 1797, at a time when the clarinet was just beginning to shine in chamber music. Its nickname comes from the catchy theme of the final movement, a popular street song of the day, and the work is renowned for its wit and sparkling, good-humoured finale.

In contrast, Nino Rota’s Clarinet Trio (1973) brings a 20th-century Italian voice to the same ensemble. Best known for his film scores, Rota here offers a dramatic and lively work, full of lyricism, rhythmic energy, and unexpected twists-a hidden gem of the clarinet repertoire.

The concert concludes with one of the pillars of Romantic chamber music: Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34. This much-loved masterpiece is a tour de force of passion, lyricism, and symphonic grandeur, balancing the programme with its emotional depth and sweeping power.
