Programme Note
An unequivocal celebratory nod in the direction of the Master, Beethoven, in the 250th anniversary of his birth. His piano trio ‘The Ghost’ forms the bedrock of our programme. So named due to eerie sounds in the slow movement, it nevertheless abounds with vitality and is a fine example of the composer at his most fervent.
The concert opens with a Schumann rarity - an arrangement for piano trio of 6 lyrical Canons written for a now obsolete pedal piano.
Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata is deservedly one of his most popular creations, displaying both mesmerising beauty and furious outbursts.
The Fountain of Arethusa evokes the sensuous world of ancient Greek mythology with opulent post-impressionist writing which, in its shimmering way, mirrors Beethoven’s Moonlight.
From Prokofiev’s characteristically charming ballet we hear the Winter Fairy to whom Cinderella turns to transform her rags into silks in preparation for the Grand Waltz at the Spring Ball. A colourful programme for the winter with overtones of magic, mystery and reflection. Yet, thanks to Beethoven, feet firmly on the ground.
