Programme Note
Acclaimed concert pianist Viv McLean returns to The Jazz Room with cellist and baritone Matthew Sharp for a concert exploring the musical world of Robert and Clara Schumann and the composer Johannes Brahms, who was a close friend.
Schumann’s great song cycle Dichterliebe (‘A Poet’s Love’) was written when he was separated from his beloved Clara, and celebrates their happiness and togetherness. Clara Schumann’s Romances were written for her and the violinist Joseph Joachim to perform together, and are lovely, private pieces, tinged with poignancy. Meanwhile, passion defiance and pathos rule in Brahms’ second Cello Sonata
7 Star Arts’ IconoClassics series presents classical music in the iconic Jazz Room at the Bull’s Head, a venue more usually associated with the genre of music from which it takes its name. The small size of the Jazz Room creates a very special, intimate atmosphere in which to enjoy music, and audience members have the opportunity to meet the performers after the concert and mingle with other concert-goers.
