Musicke in the Ayre

Programme Note

Born 400 years ago this year, Jose Marin - defrocked priest, convicted murderer, guitarist and composer - wrote over fifty songs to the baroque guitar, known to us only from a manuscript held in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

Known as “Tonos Humanos”, a number of these form the core of this programme, complemented by works by some of his contemporaries such as Hidalgo, Duron and Aranies. These rarely heard songs help to light up a relatively dark period of Spanish music.

As a native speaker, Madrid-based soprano Olalla Vargas will bring out the full flavour of these idiomatic songs with their Iberian rhythms. Din Ghani will accompany on baroque guitar and lute. Olalla and Din perform as part of Din’s “Musicke in the Ayre” project whose 7-year mission so far has been to explore (with a growing group of singers) the wider reaches of the 16/17th century repertoire for solo voice(s) and plucked string, bringing it to audiences across the UK and on the Continent.
