She is renowned for her clear style, and lyrical approach. These qualities helped her win the Biber Competition’s 2013 'Romanus Weichlein Prize' in Austria. Under the guidance of her father, the violin pedagogue Yasuro Sumi, she studied historical performance on period instruments, subsequently obtaining degrees from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Asuka has helped form several chamber music groups in Europe. Since moving to Leeds in 2015, she has played in a range of groups such as the Gabrieli Consort, London Early Opera and Leeds Baroque for which she was appointed orchestra leader in 2021.
