Programme Note
Cities are the inspiration for this concert conducted by Rebecca Miller and featuring pianist Viv McLean as soloist. Rhapsody in Blue is possibly Gershwin’s most popular work and has become synonymous with the stylishly bustling New York City of the 1930s. Copland’s Quiet City is an introverted soundscape; a deserted metropolis depicted by plaintive jazz-influenced trumpet and a pale wash of strings. There is no doubt that Mozart had a particular affinity with the city of Prague; anecdotal evidence suggests he felt its inhabitants truly understood his music. Many of his major works received premieres there including Symphony No.38.
