Programme Note
Passion, politics and fate collide with devastating consequences in Samling Academy Opera’s new production of Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. An outstanding cast of young singers from the North East are joined by the internationally acclaimed Dunedin Consort on period instruments and their director John Butt in a new production for The Fire Station that will immerse you in the sounds of the seventeenth century. A short companion piece by Claudio Monteverdi sets the scene for Dido’s royal court.
The production is directed by Samling Artist Miranda Wright with choreography by Mandy Demetriou. Tia Radix-Callixte and Max Robbins star as the lovers at the centre of this classic story; Davina Halford-Macleod is the sorceress plotting to keep them apart and Dido's court is led by Arielle Loewinger and Laura Postlethwaite as Belinda and First Lady.
Samling Institute for Young Artists inspires musical excellence in young people from school students at the start of their musical journey through to early-career artists. Based in Northumberland, the charity is internationally recognised as a leading authority in the training of young classical voices. Samling Academy is an intensive year-long training programme for young classical singers who live or study in this region. Singers who are selected for this programme are coached by world-class vocal teachers, opera singers, pianists, actors and movement specialists and take part in staged performances in venues across the North East.
