Programme Note

Continuing their residency at The Fire Station, Royal Northern Sinfonia present an 'Orchestra Takeover' where the musicians of RNS themselves have chosen all the music for a diverse programme, this time with a distinctly French flavour. There are many opportunities for individual musicians to step into the limelight, whether shining with the baroque brilliance of Boismortier and Marais, or getting into the groove of more recent compositions by Karim Al-Zand and Salim Dada - both born in former French colonies in North Africa. Mixed in among the orchestral pieces are some chamber-scale gems, rubbing shoulders with Romantic favourites by Saint-Saens and Gounod, and it all comes to a sparkling close with the musical fireworks of Poulenc's effervescent and quintissentially French, Sinfonietta.
