Programme Note
West Forest Sinfonia will perform the final concert from our current season on Sunday 29th June at 4.30pm. It will be in our usual venue, Reading University Great Hall and we are delighted to be joined by guest conductor, Joe Davies
Our summer concert journeys from Russian neoclassical clarity to French lyricism and concludes with Finnish grandeur. We open with Stravinsky’s Symphony in C. Composed during a tragic period of Stravinsky's life, this short symphony showcases the composer's mastery of neoclassical form—melding lively rhythms, transparent textures, and a sense of cool detachment.
This is followed by Poulenc’s Flute Sonata, here in a sensitive orchestral arrangement by Lennox Berkeley. Poulenc’s original is beloved for its sparkling wit, graceful melodies, and moments of poignant introspection. Berkeley’s arrangement amplifies these qualities, allowing the flute’s voice to soar above a rich orchestral palette, bringing new dimensions to this 20th-century gem.
We are thrilled to welcome co-principal flute of WFS, Samantha Moore, as our soloist.
We conclude with a performance of Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2. Although composed during a stay in an Italian mountain village, this work, like so much of Sibelius' oeuvre, is inextricably linked to his homeland and the spirit of Finnish independence. This may be felt most closely in the soaring triumphant finale. However, the pastoral warmth of the first movement and stormy drama of the third are also quintessentially Sibelius
