Programme Note

March brings a performance of one of the major cornerstones of the choral repertoire. Elijah was commissioned by the Birmingham Festival in 1846, at that time one of the ‘triennial’ festivals along with Norwich and Leeds. Mendelssohn had a close association with Birmingham, having already conducted his oratorio St Paul and premiered his Second Piano Concerto there.

Elijah is modelled on the oratorios of Handel and Bach, whom Mendelssohn championed in his lifetime. The colourful story of the Old Testament prophet is brought vividly to life in Mendelssohn’s lyrical score, packed with virtuoso solo arias and dramatic choruses.
