Programme Note

Maiastra welcomes new young talents, the Karski Quartet, directed by David Waterman, cellist of the world-renowned Endellion Quartet. Formed in Brussels in 2018, the Karski Quartet is rapidly gaining an international reputation, having been awarded the Grand Prix and Special Prize for the alumni of the Royal Conservatory in Brussels at the 4th International Music Competition Triomphe de l’Art. On the programme is Haydn’s innovative and spirited String Quartet Op 76 No 1 followed by the solemn and poignant String Quintet by Imogen Holst. The final item is Schubert’s String Quintet in C major. Composed and finished just two months before his death, this is the last of his chamber ensemble pieces and is widely considered to be one of the greatest chamber music works ever written. The Aidan Woodcock Trust, under the name ‘Maiastra’, provides courses for emerging young professionals who are hoping to make chamber music a major part of their career.
