Programme Note
FitkinWall are an internationally lauded duo of multi-harps, pianos and electronics and on this UK tour they are heavily featuring Scotland. The theme follows threads of migration, historic and current, involving interviews with migrants into Scotland and recomposed ancient highland tunes.
The concert tour is called Harpland. It focuses on circles of migration, and in particular the enforced emigration of crofters and farmers from the highlands of Scotland to make way for sheep. Scottish harpist Ruth Wall (Goldfrapp, Kathryn Tickell, Rui Fu) performs on three different harps including the Scottish Clarsach, the Renaissance Bray harp and the wire-strung Gaelic harp, there is a light installation from light artist Peter Freeman, electronics from Graham Fitkin and interspersed through the performance are these interviews with migrants coming into Scotland from Iran, Newfoundland, Ukraine and Latvia.
The Guardian recently said 'FitkinWall are a dynamic duo, reinventing themselves with every project, always true to their individual musical identities while implicitly attuned each to the other. Harpland conjures a haunting sense of longing and loss, wringing contemporary resonance from traditional tunes. Highly recommended.'
