Programme Note

Finchley Symphony Orchestra and Finchley Chamber Choir come together again with conductor Christopher Stark for the final concert of their seasons.  The programme explores humanity’s place in the world – its beauty, its uncertainty and its longing for something beyond.

Dvorak’s Symphony No.8 inhabits a world of bucolic optimism, Bohemian melodies dancing one after another leading to a rousing finale.

Brahms’ ‘Song of Destiny’, sometimes called the ‘Little Requiem’, is a profound meditation on the divide between divine serenity and human fragility.

Two short pieces by Mendelssohn for unaccompanied choir, a motet and a setting of part of the Mass, provide moments of stillness.

Vaughan Williams’ first major choral work is a glowing setting of Walt Whitman’s visionary invitation to  step beyond the familiar.
