Programme Note

The strings take centre stage in this programme that ranges from Mozart’s elegant Divertimento in D to Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. The orchestra is joined by soloist Philip Higham to perform the best-loved of Haydn’s concertos, the second of his surviving cello concertos. Charming and graceful, it is a highly accomplished work which demands considerable virtuosity of the soloist, and includes a central Adagio movement of great beauty and lyricism.
