Programme Note
A rare opportunity to hear a concert by our local professional orchestra, Truro Symphony Orchestra, whose players are donating their services free so that the proceeds will go to support music at the cathedral. Truro Choral Society is providing practical support.
The programme includes Vaughan Williams’s beautiful The Lark Ascending, with orchestra leader Philip Montgomery-Smith as soloist. This tranquil piece is followed by a complete contrast in Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. He composed it in 1880 to commemorate Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow, and the original idea was for a performance in a Moscow square with large orchestra, military band, cathedral bells and cannon fire. At this concert, audience members will be supplied with paper bags to be “exploded” on cue.
Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is another of his popular works. The so-called Fate theme is heard in all four movements and gradually transforms to culminate in a triumphal march in the last movement to bring the concert to a resounding and exuberant conclusion.
