Add to my Calendar 16-06-2018 19:30 16-06-2018 21:30 36 Truro Choral Society sings Orff Carmina Burana This June, Truro Choral Society returns to Truro Cathedral to sing Carl Orff’s hugely popular and instantly recognisable cantata of 1936, Carmina Burana, with St Mary’s Singers – one of the finest chamber choirs in Cornwall – and pupils from Roselyon and Truro schools completing the wall of sound. Orff’s striking setting of bawdy medieval poems, discovered in a Bavarian monastery in the mid-19th century, is famed for its rhythmic energy and unabashed incitement to indulge in all kinds of earthly pleasures before capricious Fortuna takes it all away. Seen by many as a choral rite of spring, the work’s spirited movements and theatrical arias never fail to entertain and grip as Orff takes the audience full circle on the cruel goddess’s wheel. This performance will be accompanied by two pianos, with Paul Comeau and Will Fairbairn as pianists, and a large percussion section, all under the direction of Martin Palmer. The superb soloists joining the choir are the accomplished operatic and oratorio soprano Catherine Hamilton; Truro Cathedral’s assistant director of music, Joseph Wicks, as tenor and slow-roasting swan; and Dawid Kimberg, regular performer with Royal Opera House and English Touring Opera, as bass.
