Programme Note

Southampton Choral Society presents Ian Schofield’s masterpiece “Freedom”, a new choral drama that tells of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in the 17th century, with text by Alexander Rhodes taken directly from the Court proceedings of that time.

The story consists of five legal incidents and graphically describes the plight of some of the slaves and how they were treated. Musically scored in the most brilliant colours, this piece is electrifying, deeply emotional, eloquent and heart wrenching.

The concert will be accompanied by Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass and The Abolition of Slavery, and spirituals sung by Joseph Padfield.
