Programme Note

Melody reigns throughout Schubert’s ‘Trout Quintet’, making it one of the most enduringly poplar pieces of chamber music in the repertoire. The template for Beethoven’s piano and wind Quintet in E flat major, Op 16, is often compared to Mozart’s Quintet for the same instruments. Yet while this essentially genial music owes a debt to Mozart, Beethoven’s voice and methods remain his own. Up to this point, he was most famous for his dazzling displays of improvisational skill and keyboard virtuosity. This quartet showcases the composing and performing prowess to come.

Linking the two well-known quintets is the lesser-known J.B. Cramers’ work. It is based on the same instrumentation as Schubert’s; piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
