Programme Note

Heinrich Schütz’s music is some of the most powerful of the 17th Century, and, given the regard in which he was held in his own time, some of the most influential, but it rarely gets an airing owing to the large-scale forces required to bring some of the most opulent pieces to life.

IT&T and OCV perform a spectrum of music from across Schütz’s oeuvre, from his more madrigalian early sacred pieces to the grand Zion Spricht a21, including motets from Psalmen David (1619), Cantiones Sacrae (1625), and Musikalische Exequien (1636). The performance is directed by renowned Baroque expert Edward Higginbottom.

Instruments of Time and Truth and Oxford Consort of Voices will be joined for the largest pieces by some of the University of Oxford’s finest singers, and this concert is supported by the Faculty of Music.

Instruments of Time and Truth are Oxford’s own period instrument orchestra, presenting world-class performances of Baroque and Classical music in Oxford and around the UK.
