Programme Note
We commemorate Armistice day through the music of composers who lived during, and in some cases fought in, the Great War of 1914 – 1918. Our composers represent the nations of the UK, Ireland, Australia, France and Germany.
One half of the music we will sing was written between 1907 and 1916. We have included folksongs that were written just before the war as they provide a narrative foil to the concert, reflecting back to a time of innocence and unknowing before the outbreak of one of the largest conflagrations in history.
Our eleven composers of the war years are joined by four 21st century composers – Curry, Lauridsen, Łukaszewski and MacMillan – whose work amplifies our three themes of remembrance, peace and light.
It is especially poignant that our concert should take place in Eglwys Gymraeg Canol Llundain / The Welsh Church of Central London. Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who led the UK through the war and went on to become a key figure in the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, was a regular attendee at the church.
