Programme Note

For their final concert of the season, the Cambridge University Orchestra are joined by cellist Robert Cohen. One of the foremost cellists of our time, Cohen has been described as “a virtuoso of genius” and “divinely gifted”. Cohen also maintains an active career as a conductor and in 2010 became professor of cello at the Royal Academy of Music.

After Rossini’s overture to “L’Italiana in Algeri”, always a favorite, Cohen will perform two works for solo cello and orchestra, Haydn’s stately and lyrical cello concerto in D and Bloch’s deeply moving From Jewish Life. The concert concludes with Mozart’s Jupiter symphony, a perennial favorite from its energetic opening chords to its cantabile slow movement to its folk-like minuet to its fugal finale.

In a concert contrasting and combining poise and passion, the Cambridge University Orchestra and Robert Cohen show the talent and artistry of our student instrumentalists.
