Programme Note
Join us to celebrate Debussy’s centenary, as the Cambridge University Orchestra, conducted by Sian Edwards, performs Debussy’s evocative classic La Mer as well as quintessential French sounds from before and after Debussy’s life. It is always a joy to welcome Edwards, our Artistic Advisor, to the stage. She is Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and also works with leading orchestras around the world. We are also particularly excited to welcome CUMS Concerto Competition 2018 winner Ignacio Maña-Mesas to perform Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. This instrument combination is undeservedly rare and we recommend taking this opportunity to hear a saxophone concerto!
From Gershwin’s exuberant An American in Paris to Berlioz’s Overture ‘Le Corsaire’ to La Mer itself, this concert celebrates the intricate care each of these composers took to make the most of every instrument of the orchestra, creating scenes – whether real or imagined – so clear they could be photographs.
