Programme Note
The late quartet in G reveals Schubert at his most profoundly moving and mature. Symphonic in its conception and proportions, it encompasses extreme contrasts of character and emotion and takes us on a momentous journey. Equally extreme, but far more concentrated, is Janáček's first string quartet which feels like a whole opera in little more than a quarter of an hour. Haydn's radiant, sunny string quartet is the opening piece — one of the first works the Endellions learnt thirty-five years ago.
