Programme Note
Mozart's searching, warm and adventurous quartet is followed by Mendelssohn's prodigious heart-breaking work of mature genius, surely one of the greatest compositions by a teenager, except perhaps for his own octet and viola quintet. Ravel's only quartet, also a young man's work, has a distinctive, extremely refined French perfume and is full of colours and textures not dreamt of in the predominant Austro-German mainstream.
