Begun during the Second World War but not completed until 1947, it is based on Gregorian chant, which gives the work a timeless feel. Contrasting with the Requiem are two other works from the middle of the last century: from England, Gerald Finzi’s extended anthem Lo, the full, final sacrifice, and from the USA, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, composed in 1965 for the Southern Cathedrals Festival.
