Programme Note
Nigel Blomiley a former principal cellist of the BBC Concert Orchestra and a long-standing friend of the WSO, has nominated the Mutiple Sclerosis Society to benefit from this concert. He will play the Cello Concerto by SCHUMANN, one of the most celebrated in the cello repertoire.
Less familiar to some, though it is solidly established in the string orchestra canon, will be the Serenade for Strings by Lennox BERKELEY, a friend of Benjamin Britten and a leading figure in British music during the 20th century. Somewhat in contrast, we shall also play the much-loved Holberg Suite byGRIEG, written “in olden style” for the 200th birthday of the Scandinavian playwright Ludwig Holberg. The concert will begin with the beguiling and instantly recognisable Valse Triste by another Scandinavian composer, SIBELIUS.
