Programme Note

In keeping with this year’s Festival theme, From Shadows to Light: Musical Journeys in Conflict & Peace, the evening's programme explores music’s role in transformation—expressing sorrow, resilience, and hope.

The Hertfordshire Festival String Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Braime, presents a poignant and uplifting selection from the British string orchestra tradition. The programme includes Elgar’s Elegy for Strings, Bridge’s Lament for String Orchestra, and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings - written in the dark wartime year of 1943 and performed by two superb young musicians, tenor Guy Elliott and horn soloist Chloe Harrison.

Works by Vaughan Williams, Holst, and Elgar complete this stirring celebration of music’s enduring ability to illuminate the human experience.

A moving and evocative finale, bringing the festival to a close in a spirit of reflection and renewal.
