Programme Note
In her book ‘The Blazing World’ in 1666, author Margaret Cavendish sketches out a new world: a fantastic empire in which the protagonist is elevated to sole ruler and thus gains the freedom to rule and shape things according to her own ideas. What a utopia in this male-dominated era! At a time when women had little influence on the shaping of their lives, the desire for female self-realisation takes centre stage here. Women composers also sought this path in music: as muses, they served as a source of inspiration; as patrons, they also promoted cultural creativity - but their own compositions often remained in the shadow of their male contemporaries.
The Ensemble Interchange shines a spotlight on the music of female composers of the 17th and 18th centuries and tells the stories of women who created spaces for creative expression in a wide variety of ways - and thus a world of their own. While some of them were admired during their lifetime, their names are almost unjustly forgotten today. The programme not only celebrates the beauty of baroque sounds, but also reflects the ongoing struggle for equality and recognition in the world of music. Although women today have more opportunities and visibility in the music industry, many challenges remain.
The ensemble named itself after the expressionist painting ‘Interchange’ (1955) by Willem de Kooning - fast, gestural brushstrokes, deep and expressive: the five musicians came together on the occasion of the German Music Competition 2024: Friederike Vollert (recorder), Matija Chlupacek (recorders), Sara Roque Coroado (baroque cello), Felix Ritter (lute) and Tung-Han Hu (harpsichord) came together and were directly awarded a scholarship from the German Music Council, combined with inclusion in the German Music Competition concert funding programme, and the special prize from the Ensembleakademie Freiburg.
With an exuberant joy of experimentation and virtuoso creativity, the quintet dedicates itself primarily to music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
