Programme Note

Sir John Eliot Gardiner has added the music of Felix Mendelssohn to his ever-growing list of specialisms, with a series of much-praised orchestral recordings.

Here Mendelssohn’s Goethe-inspired overture and the majestic 'Reformation' Symphony frame Schumann’s meditative and lyrical Cello Concerto, an underrated work which has enjoyed a recent renaissance. The brilliant young French cellist Gautier Capuçon, one of a pair of virtuoso siblings, makes his debut with the LSO.
