Programme Note

This Halloween, Gothic Opera are staging the UK premiere of bloody, spine-chilling tale Maria de Rudenz by Gaetano Donizetti at the atmospheric Battersea Arts Centre. The opera will be fully staged, with a cast of exciting young singers and a new arrangement for chamber orchestra. Maria de Rudenz is inspired by an episode of Matthew Gregory Lewis's quintessential gothic novel The Monk, and tells a story of deceit, murder, betrayal, and resurrection from the dead. It premiered in 1838 in Venice.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
