Programme Note
Boxgrove Priory's acoustics are particularly good for renaissance polyphony. Last time, we sang a masterpiece from England. This time, it's the turn of the Spanish school, and what a wealth of exquisite music there is to choose from!
This performance is the first to use a brand new critical edition of the Victoria by Italian scholar Enrico Correggia.
This event is generously supported by Angel Early Music, with our grateful thanks.
The Beaufort Singers is a chamber choir formed at the University of Cambridge in 2016 under the direction of Joseph Wicks. Named after Lady Margaret Beaufort who founded St John’s College, Cambridge, the choir’s raison d’être has become the Boxgrove Choral Festival. Founded in 2018, this takes place in the extraordinary 12th century Boxgrove Priory in West Sussex, with a schedule of services, recitals and concerts. The Priory’s acoustics are ideal for all kinds of unaccompanied choral music, and the repertoire typically reflects this, featuring renaissance polyphony and contemporary works.
