Programme Note
Composed in 1692, Purcell's The Fairy-Queen consists of an astonishing set of masques, written to accompany Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and is one of the very first English operas, representing in many ways the culmination of Purcell's dramatic style. It is possible that the work, with its concluding masque featuring Hymen, the God of Marriage, was written for the 15th wedding anniversary of William and Mary, who were on the throne during the completion of the Royal Hospital and the consecration of its Wren Chapel in 1691: it is hard, therefore, to think of a more apt setting for this concert performance of Bury Court Operas critically acclaimed 2014 production, moving to the Royal Hospital for one night only: an unmissable treat to open our 2014 RH Concert Series.
