Programme Note
Mei Yi Foo, winner of BBC Music Magazine Newcomer Award for her album Musical Toys and the winner of the Maria Callas Grand Prix ’08 in Athens is a pianist who continues to captivate audiences around the world at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Finlandia Hall, Athens Megaron and Salle Gaveau.
Mei Yi’s recent and future orchestral engagements include Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, Poznan Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Oviedo Filarmonia and London Chamber Orchestra. She has worked alongside conductors such as Christian Arming, Matthias Bamert, Martyn Brabbins, Claus Peter Flor, János Fürst, Kirill Karabits and Christopher Warren-Green. Her avid rapport with musicians also brings her to direct orchestras such as the Malaysian Philharmonic and the Russian Virtuosi.
Mei Yi appears in recitals and at major festivals all over the world and her upcoming and past highlights include Hamburg’s NDR Das Neue Werk Series, CRR Concert Hall, Istanbul, City Hall Hong Kong, Wigmore Hall, The Forge, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Festival O/Modernt in Sweden, Bravissimo Festival Guatemala, Ultraschall Festival for New Music in Berlin and the Lucerne Festival. Other dates include an invitation from Lorin Maazel’s Castletown Festival, Mänttä Festival in Finland, the Pharos Arts Foundation in Cyprus and the Britten-Pears in Aldeburgh working with Mitsuko Uchida.
A native of Malaysia, Mei Yi was awarded the medal of Setiawan Tuanku Muhriz for her contribution towards art and music in her home country. In London where she now resides, Mei Yi enjoys playing chamber music with Dimitri Ashkenazy, Shlomy Dobrinsky, Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Antti Siirala, Matthew Trusler, Ashley Wass, as well as working with prominent composers such as Dai Fujikura, Chris Paul Harman and Unsuk Chin. Following the success of her debut recording “Recital”, Mei Yi’s award-winning new album “Musical Toys” extends her exploration of the 20th/21st century repertoire. It was featured in The Times, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Lebrecht’s CD of the Week and garnered 5* reviews from the BBC Music Magazine and Germany's Klassik.
