Programme Note
Paul Spicer writes:
"Our summer concert celebrates the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. We are performing a wonderfully varied programme which moves from the sublime Vaughan Williams part-songs which are classics of the genre to George Shearing’s jazz-inspired Music to Hear where a double bass player will add that pungent pizzicato to the mix! A pianist joins us for Shearing, too, and, in addition, for a fabulous set of Fancies by the Swedish composer Sven-Eric Johanson and for William Mathias’ wide-ranging Shakespeare Songs. With Britten’s colourful Gloriana Dances setting us off this will be a memorable and enjoyable evening’s music."
We are delighted that Juliet Stevenson is to join us on this occasion. Her spoken extracts from Shakespeare will nicely complement what we are singing. Anton Lesser will join us when we repeat this concert, 2 July 2016, in Stratford ArtsHouse.
