Brahms, Schumann and Humperdinck - A Romantic Journey

Part of the Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra 61st Season 2025-2026

Add to my Calendar 30-11-2025 19:00 30-11-2025 21:00 36 Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra Join us for an exploration of three masterpieces from the  Romantic repertoire. Our concert opens with Humperdinck's Overture to Hänsel und Gretel, its enchanting melodies conjuring up a haunted forest and a tale of childhood fears and triumph.  The opening ‘Evening Prayer’, is one of the most beautiful chorales for the French horn section ever written. Next is Robert Schumann's cello concerto, an intensely lyrical and intimate exploration of the cello's expressive depth as it interweaves with the orchestral accompaniment.  The effect, as Clara put it, is “wholly ravishing, and what euphony and deep feeling one finds in all the melodic passages!”  Listen out for the dialogue between the principal cellist and the soloist in the central Adagio section.  Is this a conversation between Robert and his beloved Clara? The evening ends with Johannes Brahms’ sunny, affirmative and majestic second symphony inspired by an idyllic summer holiday spent beside Lake Wörthersee.  Its pastoral melodies and exhilarating finale will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired. We are excited to be joined by cellist, Flora Valila for the concerto. Flora started her musical training in Luxembourg before moving to London in 2020 to study with Professor David Cohen.  She is currently undertaking her Master’s diploma with Alexander Chaushian at the Royal College of Music where she is a Cello Competition winner.
