They play the gypsy music that Brahms loved listening to in the Viennese tavern Zum Roten Igel – ‘The Red Hedgehog’ – hence the name, ZRI. Brahms often drew on ‘folk’ styles in his own writing. So think of ZRI as a Hungarian gypsy band that can also play Brahms – and that helped him to let out some of his repressed late-19th-century emotions.
