Programme Note
Clifton Festival favourites, The Erebus Ensemble and Tom Williams, return to open this Summer's events with a concert on the theme of mercy. The group performs well-known masterpieces such as Allegri's sublime Miserere mei, Deus and Palestrina's era-definingMissa Papae Marcelli, as well as contemporary works by Josephine Stephenson and Philip Stopford. At the centre of the programme is Scarlatti's polyphonic tour de force, Stabat Mater à10. Renowned for its mastery of form and poignancy of word setting, this work is one of the treasures of Baroque period and among the most expressive settings of this 13th century hymn text of all time.
This concert is supported by the Diocese of Clifton marking the Year of Mercy.
