Programme Note
From the ancient world of Henry Purcell through to the transcendentalist nature of Osvaldo Golijov’s work, this programme presents a spectrum of colours and musical soundscapes. Purcell's ingenious fantasias for viol consort are a common thread here, the source of inspiration for countless English composers, not least for Benjamin Britten. Both Golijov and Britten feature the musical form of a chaconne, which appear in various guises, morphed and shaped beyond recognition. The programme culminates in the last of Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ quartets; full-blooded and hurtling away from the conventional, yet at all times keeping us well and truly grounded.
“A wonderfully dedicated group of musicians who bring assuredness and freshness to everything they play" (Alina Ibragimova)
About the Sunday Concerts
Founded in the 1880s, our chamber music concert series is the longest-running of its kind in Europe. Conway Hall was purpose-built in 1929 to host concerts and lectures, and they have continued here until the present day. The ethos of “affordable classical music for all” still remains.
