Programme Note

Franz Schubert Octet in F Major

Schubert’s Octet in F major D. 803 is perhaps one of the most important works in the chamber music literature.

It was originally commissioned by the clarinettist Ferdinand Troyer and composed by Schubert in March 1824.

The octet is a large-scale work made of six movements and written for clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello and double bass.

The instrumentation clearly reminds us of Beethoven’s Septet which was in fact taken as a starting model by Schubert.

This work is a tour-de-force for the players but it lays at the heart of the chamber music repertoire so we are very happy to present it to you played by the Michael Haydn Soloists.
