Programme Note
A life-affirming shout of praise to the power of love, the monumental forces required for Mahler’s Symphony No.8 have earned it the nickname ‘Symphony of a Thousand’. Part I is based on the ninth century hymn Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Spirit) and Part II inspired by the final scene of Goethe’s Faust where Faust’s soul, redeemed by love, ascends to Heaven in a blaze of glory. Featuring eight soloists, massed choirs and a huge orchestra, it’s a roof-raising spectacular.
