Programme Note
Lewisham Choral Society presents a truly regal extravaganza of choral and orchestral music by Haydn and Mozart. The professional lives of both composers were inextricably linked with the imperial court of the Holy Roman Empire, of which their Austrian homeland was a part. It is easy to see why Mozart’s majestic Coronation Mass, a blend of glorious music for choir and soloists, became a particular favourite of the Viennese court and is today still one of his most prized sacred works. This same imperial court later commissioned Haydn to compose his rousing Te Deum in C for the Emperor’s wife, Maria Theresa. The choir also presents another gem from Papa Haydn, his delightful motet Insanae et vanae curae. The dramatic opening section, describing man’s preoccupation with ‘vain and raging cares,’ contrasts with its lyrical conclusion that there is hope as long as we put our trust in God. And following a magnificent rendition of the beautiful Elvira Madigan piano concerto last November, Nico de Villiers returns to play the darker tones of Mozart’s previous keyboard work, his Piano Concerto No 20. The choir is accompanied by the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dan Ludford-Thomas. A crowning achievement all round, we’re sure you’ll agree!
