Programme Note

AN "ENTENTE MUSICALE"!

Lewisham Choral Society returns to the glorious setting of the Grade 1 listed Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square to perform French and English music from the early and mid 20th century. Amidst Arts & Craft and pre-Raphaelite splendour, the choir sings a setting of the Mass by the virtually blind organist Louis Vierne – described as 'a worthy retort to Fauré's Requiem' – and a heart-felt prayer for peace by the young, prize-winning Lili Boulanger.

To represent this side of the Channel the choir turns to two works by Benjamin Britten: his short motet Deus in adjutorium meum and his scintillating and celebratory setting of the words of the 18th century mystic poet Christopher Smart under the title Rejoice in the Lamb. Cat lovers will particularly enjoy the ode to Smart's companion Jeoffry!

The choral pieces will be interspersed by instrumental works by Vierne's teacher Widor and a piece by Vierne himself which echoes the chimes of Westminster: a true “entente musicale”!
