Programme Note

As 2015 draws to a close, we remember the plight of those families forced from their homes by war, tyrrany and destruction and cast our thoughts back to the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, depicted in the Shepherds' Farewell by Berlioz. This is one of many seasonal tunes from around the world which Lewisham Choral Society will sing at its annual concert of Christmas for choir and audience.

We recall also the eternal plea for peace on Earth: In Terra Pax. This work, written in 1954 by the English composer Gerald Finzi recalls his early memory of hearing Christmas bells across the Gloucestershire countryside, echoed here by the poetry of Robert Bridges and the Nativity story as told in St Luke's Gospel.

And finally in our programme we celebrate the work of two great promoters of Christmas music: Sir David Willcocks, who died in September aged 95 and John Rutter, whose 70th birthday fell in the same month.
