Programme Note
Dame Sarah Connolly, Leeds Lieder Patron and operatic superstar needs no introduction. Firmly established as one of the most important musicians of our time she has made the repertoire of Handel, Mahler and Britten very much her own. A dramatic intensity, probing intellect and one of the most beautiful instruments currently before the public makes her recital appearances red letter days. A rare performance of Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer in the piano accompanied version forms the central section of this recital followed by Folk song inspired Lieder from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and a collection of the finest English song. In the line of great British mezzo-sopranos interpreting Elgar’s Sea Pictures, Sarah Connolly has made the work very much her own.
