Programme Note

Syrinx is an ensemble dedicated to the performance of historical wind music. From the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries wind music could be heard everywhere from grand state occasions to the humblest village dance and it is their aim to recreate this impressive tradition.

The Sweet Month of May is a celebration of Spring as seen through the eyes of medieval and renaissance lovers, from the humblest goatherd to the noblest of kings. Syrinx presents a foot-tapping array of songs, dances, masques and fantasies, evoking the flavours of long-past May-time revels from the courts, town squares and taverns of a bygone era.

The programme includes music from the Rossi Codex, Reina Codex and Fitzalan Partbooks, and by composers such as Machaut, Ciconia, Dufay, Susato and Gervaise.
