Programme Note
In their 70th year, the London Mozart Players and Howard Shelley present iconic works that represent the shift from the Classical to the Romantic era.
During their lifetimes Mozart, Beethoven and Hummel all enjoyed huge success. Yet today, while Mozart and Beethoven are still the headliners, Hummel is simply the support act. In this special Sunday afternoon concert, LMP and acclaimed pianist Howard Shelley present all three composers with equal billing. Mozart’s ebullient Symphony No. 34 in C contrasts with the precision and muscular strength of Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, while between the two giants, Hummel’s elegant Piano Concerto No. 6 in F sits comfortably, it’s unceasingly melodic and virtuoso piano writing clearly demonstrating why Hummel’s reputation should be reestablished in the classical repertoire.
Pianist, conductor and recording artist Howard Shelley, a champion of the underrated Hummel, has enjoyed a long association with the London Mozart Players. Enjoy their intuitive partnership as they perform these masterpieces, and judge Hummel’s genius for yourself.
