Add to my Calendar 24-04-2018 19:45 24-04-2018 21:45 36 Timothy Ridout with Philippa Mo Our new candlelit Shortwave Nights series continues: Philippa Mo invites award-winning viola-player Timothy Ridout, "a fine, young violist with a solid tone, perfect intonation, solid technique, and charisma." (American Record Guide 2018). In a programme exploring the beauty of the instrument with what will be undeniable virtuosity, Timothy presents two great solo works by Bach, and the first suite by the 'wild modernist' Reger. The Tides of Mananan will be presented by the leading British composer Paul Patterson himself. He says of the piece: “The Gaelic name of Mananan Mac Lir means Mananan, son of the sea. He was a great hero in Irish mythology and his magical powers are also well-known in Manx folklore. He had power over the sea, understood tides and could foretell storms. Manx fishermen would call for his blessing before they sailed. He used his magic art to protect the island against its enemies by drawing a cloak of mist over it. Mananan was also known as a ferocious giant and a warrior of incredible strength and violent temper.” Tim is joined by Philippa Mo, violin for William Alwyn's fiery neo-classical Sonata Impromptu. Since winning 1st Prize in the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in 2016, Timothy has gone on to perform widely in Europe. Engagements this season include appearances as soloist with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Sinfonia Cymru and Young Musicians European Orchestra (in Israel). He returns to Wigmore Hall, makes his debut in Tokyo (Musashino Hall), performs George Benjamin’s Viola, Viola at the Southbank Centre on the invitation of Tabea Zimmermann, and gives recitals at Saffron Hall, the Newbury and Kilkenny Festivals. In 2017 Champs Hill released his first CD of music by Vieuxtemps to critical acclaim. Born in London, Timothy studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Martin Outram, graduating with the Queen’s Award for Excellence. “Ridout displays a consistently imaginative ear for tonal colours and an exciting variety of vibrato ... clearly a talent to follow.” (The Strad) Shortwave Cafe is a recently-created, spacious arts hub just a 5 minute walk south of Bermondsey tube station, part of the Peek Freans Biscuit Factory complex.
