The story sweeps through time and place - from domesticity to exile, wealth to poverty - and it raises some questions along the way. Who was Rachmaninov, beyond the 6 foot scowl that was Stavinsky's sense of him, and can a western world that cannot even agree on how to spell his name ever quite come to terms with what his music is about? Devised by Michael White (based upon programmes that he has presented in the past for BBC Radio) and featuring the soprano Ilona Domnich, pianist Sholto Kynoch and White himself as the narrator this concert tells the story of Rachmaninov through his own music.
